1.
By Ferry to South
Uist If you enjoy spending time at sea, take the MV Lord of the
Isles ferry from Oban. This pleasant five-hour journey takes you
through the Sound of Mull and the Southern Minch before arriving
in Lochboisdale, South Uist (about 6 miles from Milton). Alternatively,
a similar service stops briefly in Barra before arriving at Lochboisdale
and takes seven hours. These routes are the most direct by land
and sea. For enquiries and online booking check the Caledonian MacBrayne
website: www.calmac.co.uk
2. By Ferry to North Uist
A shorter option by sea is to drive to Uig in Skye followed by a
ferry to Lochmaddy in North Uist (about 38 miles from Milton). The
sea journey is considerably shorter at one hour and forty-five minutes
and although the drive is longer, the visitor attractions and scenery
along the way more than compensate. Ferry details are on the Caledonian
MacBrayne website as described above. Click here for our recommended
route to the Isles which also utilises this ferry.
3. By Air to Benbecula
The fastest way to get to the Uists is to fly from Glasgow International
Airport. It only takes an hour and there are flights daily on British
Airways.
4. Island hopping
With the recent construction of two causeways and improved ferry
links, inter-island travel has become much easier. You can travel
from the Butt of Lewis to Vatersay, just south of Barra in a single
day. So if you want to see more of the other Islands this may be
the best option for you. Check out the Caledonian
MacBrayne website. |
